Professor Jeffrey D. Camm is currently Associate Dean of Business Analytics and Inmar Presidential Chair in Business Analytics at the Wake Forest University School of Business where he has led the creation of a new Master of Science degree program in Business Analytics. Previously, he was a faculty member for 31 years in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati where he held the Joseph S. Stern Chair in Business Analytics, and served twenty years as department head of the Department of Operations, Business Analytics and Information Systems. He was also founding director of the UC Center for Business Analytics, an industry/academic collaboration. While at Cincinnati, he received a life-time appointment as a Fellow of the Graduate School, the University’s highest honor for contributions in research and graduate education. Camm earned his B.S. in Mathematics from Xavier University (Ohio) and his Ph.D. in Management Science from Clemson University.
Dr. Camm’s area of research is optimization applied to problems in operations management and marketing. His research has been published in Science, Management Science, Operations Research, and Interfaces, among other journals. His work in supply chain optimization with Procter & Gamble was a 1996 Edelman Award Finalist and is credited with helping P&G save over $250 million annually in their North American supply chain. In 1998, his joint work on nature reserve site selection for efficient conservation was published in the journal Science and appeared in a brief to President Clinton. Camm has also been the recipient of a number of teaching awards, including the 2006 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS practice. He is coauthor of seven texts on business statistics, management science, and business analytics. His teaching, heavily influenced by his extensive consulting experience, has always been focused on creating truly impactful OR practitioners.
Camm has a long history of service to INFORMS. Early in his career, he was active in the Cincinnati/Dayton Chapter of INFORMS, including serving as Secretary, Vice President and President of the chapter. He served as Functional Editor of Operations Management for Interfaces from 1999-2004 and as Editor in Chief of Interfaces from 2005-2010. He served as Associate Editor of INFORMS Transactions on Education from 1999-2013. An avid supporter of the Edelman Award, he has served as an Award Judge twice, as an Edelman Coach, as a member of the Edelman Gala Committee and as the Edelman Gala Master of Ceremonies. He has served on the INFORMS Prize Committee, including one year as Chair. Camm has been particularly active in service to INFORMS Meetings, having served as Cluster Chair, Annual Meeting Program Chair and as a member of the INFORMS Meetings Committee for ten years. He currently serves on the INFORMS Committee on Masters Programs in Analytics.
For his many contributions to the field of operations research and management science, and for his distinguished service to INFORMS, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences expresses its sincere appreciation to Jeffrey D. Camm by awarding him the 2016 George E. Kimball Medal.
Professor Jeffrey D. Camm, Head of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management, and College of Business Research Fellow, of the University of Cincinnati, has consistently been recognized for excellence in teaching, having been named the Ronald J. Dornoff Fellow of Teaching Excellence by the College of Business.
As a teacher, Professor Camm combines theoretical rigor with a strong commitment to effective practice by drawing on his extensive consulting experience, including work with Procter and Gamble that was a finalist in the 1997 Franz Edelman competition. His former students occupy OR/MS and related positions in many major organizations including two former students who were finalists in the 2005 Franz Edelman competition. Several former students submitted letters in strong support of Dr. Camm’s nomination for this award, including a distinguished practitioner who wrote:
- “In Dr. Camm’s class, we learned how to choose and apply the most appropriate technique to address the challenge at hand. We also learned the importance of finding creative and innovative solutions to relevant problems. Dr. Camm found the right balance of academic theory, practical application, and excitement toward OR techniques to ignite a passion that has stayed with me for over 20 years. I owe a great deal of my success to the support and guidance provided by Dr. Camm many years ago.”
Professor Camm is the author of a many teaching-related articles, two textbooks, and has spoken and delivered many tutorials on topics related to teaching OR/MS. His passion for practice is also evident in his eleven years of leadership of the Department of Quantitative Analysis and Operations Management. This department hosts the UC Center for Productivity Improvement, annually holds the E.Leonard Arnoff Memorial Lecture on the Practice of Management Science, and has been recognized by Interfaces as a major contributor to the literature on the practice of OR/MS.
For his extraordinary dedication to his students’ learning of management science practice and the resulting impact they have had in industry, INFORMS is proud to award the 2006 prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice to Jeffrey D. Camm.
